Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Many children’s books explore emotions and help children reflect and develop their own personal, social and emotional skills.  Here are just a few of my recommendations:

‘I Love You Blue Kangaroo’ – Emma Chichester Clark
This book deals with losing and finding favourite toys and the importance of sharing

The Little White Owl’ – Tracey Corderoy
This story explores how everyone is different and that real beauty is in the inside

The Gruffalo’ – Julia Donaldson
This is my son’s favourite book!  Very cleverly written, it explores the emotions of feeling frightened and being brave.

Sometimes I Feel Like a Storm Cloud’ – Lezlie Evans
This book tackles a range of emotions young children experience on a daily basis.

On Monday When It Rained’ – Cheryl Kachenmeister
This book has real pictures and words of young children displaying a range of emotions.

‘Yes We Can!’ – Sam McBratney
This is a lovely story which explains how we are all different and have varying talents and special traits.  Nobody can do everything but everyone is good at something.

When I Feel Angry’ – Cornelia Maude Spelman
This story deals with anger and learning to cope with this emotion more positively.

The Rainbow Fish’  -Marcus Pfister
This is a very popular story amongst young children.  It deals with learning that being kind and sharing makes you feel happy inside.

Frog is Frog’ – Max Velthuijs
This book focuses on self-esteem and realising that we are all special.
